Armagh3 v Bangor 2 Match Report 23-11-2019

25 Nov 2019 by City of Armagh Rugby Club

City’s of Armagh Thirds certainly met their match when they travelled to Uprichard Park on Saturday to take on Bangor Seconds in Provincial League 2. The Armagh side arrived full of confidence after a good training session on Thursday but that confidence was short lived. The Bangor side demonstrated greater skill and experience around the park and were able to draw the Armagh team into tight forward play exposing the Armagh back line to the Bangor onslaught. Armagh suffered an early blow when prop Kurtis Sherry had to retire with a rib injury and later Neil Lutton suffered a shoulder injury which persisted for most of the match.
Armagh had an early kick at goal but this was from well out and missed by Andrew Knipe. The first Bangor score came within a few minutes of referee Clive Gardiner blowing the whistle and awarding Bangor a penalty for a high tackle. A Bangor try soon followed then another and another before half time. All came the same way with the Bangor centres and wingers out flanking the Armagh defence with their speed and agility. Half time 22-0 to the home side.
Despite an upbeat team talk at half time Bangor came out stronger for the second half and scored twice in ten minutes, one being scored by their right winger from the Armagh 22 metre line.
The penalty count was high on both sides and eventually the referee penalised Bangor with a yellow card. The Armagh advantage was short lived when Armagh were similarly penalised.
Armagh did play the entire match with enthusiasm and started to come good in the last fifteen minutes getting a late try when Tom Johnstone pushed over in the corner. The conversion was missed and a final try from Bangor saw the match close out with Bangor winning by 39 – 5.
Armagh have a home match against Clogher Valley Seconds on Friday night with a 7.30 kick off when they will expect to restore some pride. The tea would appreciate your support at the Palace Grounds.
