Armagh Seconds progress in Towns Cup Romp
The seconds played Rainey 2nds at Hatrick Park on Saturday in the Towns cup first round, ironically the same opponents as in last year’s first round. The game turned out to be a one sided affair with Armagh proving convincing winners. The game started with Rainey winning early possession and putting a long series of phases together pounding the Armagh line on several occasions. With a sound defensive line marshalled by Stephen Morton and Willie Martin, Armagh broke up field though Gerard Treanor and Ollie Millar who off loaded to Josh kennedy showing good pace to touch down at the posts. Chris Cousens added the extras to put the visitors 7-0 ahead on 15 minutes. With confidence building Armagh went though the phases with Phil Pollack at 10 pulling the strings. Matthew Reaney received the ball deep in Rainey territory and went on a jinking run to score at the posts with the conversion added by Cousens, 14-0. Cousens got on the end of an offload from Stuart Lester to keep the score board ticking over with another converted try and Lester was involved again making a run from his own 22 deep into the Rainey half. Stephen Morton took the ball on and when Jack Treanor received it he stepped out of a couple of attempted tackles to touch down mid way out. Cousens again added the extras and Rainey were now shell shocked at being blitzed by Armagh’s fire power. An Armagh penalty on half way was kicked into Rainey’s 22 where a clean lineout take by Ryan Morton ended with a controlled drive for the line with Jack Treanor touching down again. The half time whistle blew with Armagh 35 – 0 to the good. The second half resumed with Armagh playing to their game plan with Kurtis Sherry and Andrew Morton carrying ball into contact. With Gerard Treanor dictating the play, Cousens now at 10 kicked to the corner for an Armagh lineout. With the same routine in place, another catch and drive led to Jack Treanor scoring his third try of the day. Cousen’s good kicking form continued with an excellent conversion from the touchline. Rainey took the game to Armagh from the restart and in a rare incursion into Armagh territory, good recycling led to a converted try, 42-7 to Armagh. On 57 minutes and with Archie McAlpine and Gareth Megaw sprung from the bench, Reaney made another break and off loaded to Kennedy who again showed a clean pair off heels to race over from 40 metres out. After a Rainey kick up field, Lester gained possession and ran the ball back into the home 22 where the forwards drove for the line. Quick ball along the back line led to Reaney crossing for his second of the day with Cousens again adding the conversion. The referee blew up early to bring the game to an end with the final score 56 – 7 to Armagh. This was another very good performance and the team now await with interest the draw for the second round.
