Armagh3 v Coleraine Match Report 03-11-2018

5 Nov 2018 by City of Armagh Rugby Club

On the face of it the trip to Coleraine to play their 2nd XV looked like quite a challenge, given that Coleraine were the only other undefeated side in the division and that Armagh were travelling with a severely depleted side and had to call players up from the Fourth’s. However from the start Armagh dominated the play with the pack controlling the scrums and the backs passing and carrying the ball with patience and control. It was scrummaging that led to the first try on 10 minutes when Joe Clarke at number 8 picked up the ball and ran through the struggling Coleraine defence for a try left of the posts. Andrew Magowan added 2points for 7-0.
The second try came 4 minutes later when Gareth Graham, who had stepped in at hooker from the 4ths, intercepted a Coleraine pass and ran half the length of the pitch to touch down under the posts. Again Magowan added the points for 14-0.
Coleraine started to apply more pressure and challenged the Armagh line. Two penalties on the 5m line were taken as scrums but Armagh managed a turnover feeding the ball to Andrew Trimble who ran the full length of the pitch, evading Coleraine tackles, to score in the corner for 19-0.
On the stroke of half time Magowan picked up a try of his own that started from a scrum in the centre of the pitch. 24-0.
Coleraine started the second half more strongly and took the Armagh defence by surprise to score under the posts. However the conversion was missed. Armagh found it more difficult to get into the game but took their opportunities well and it was Jeffrey Dougan who added a fifth try for a 31-5 win.
Armagh Thirds, who have moved up two divisions in two years, remain undefeated and lead the table with a maximum 20 points from 4 games.
The Armagh team was Neil Lutton, Gareth Graham, Simon Carlisle, Adam Hume, Nial McKee, Kyle Gallagher, Connor Simms (capt), Joe Clarke, Trevor Girvan, Andrew Magowan, Scott Armstrong, Jeffrey Dougan, Dan Reynolds, Andrew Trimble, John Johnston, Andrew Fletcher and Stuart Agnew.
