Seconds in Shock Junior Cup Exit

Armagh seconds played Lisburn away in round 1 of the Junior cup on Saturday past with ambitions of emulating last season’s cup final appearance at the Kingspan Arena. Unfortunately the locals came out on the wrong side of a 35-28 score line in a game which was played end to end with Lisburn taking their chances when presented to them. The game kicked off with Armagh settling into their rhythm with an early penalty from Cormac Fox. A lively Lisburn side responded after 15 minutes by scoring a converted try when an overlap was created on the left wing. Armagh were achieving parity in the scrums after a torrid start when the big Lisburn eight dominated the early proceedings. The front row of Clarke, Hoey and Lutton were also to the fore when ball carrying making the hard yards with Millar and Martin also punching holes in the Lisburn defence. Another penalty by Fox brought the half time score to 7-6 to Lisburn. On the restart another Fox penalty gave the visitors the lead for the first time and shortly after the same player gave his team a good lineout position deep into Lisburn’s 22 . After a good catch and drive, John Clarke forced his way over for an unconverted try, 14-7 to Armagh. Nathan Rogers was lively at 9 with John Faloon and Andrew Winder making inroads through the centre. Another opportunity came on the 65th minute with a 5 metre attacking Armagh scrum which resulted in Ollie Millar picking and driving over the line for a good try. With the conversion by Fox Armagh seemed to be in the driving seat however Lisburn had other ideas and when an unfortunate bounce of the ball was snapped up, they scored a converted try at the posts 21-14. More Lisburn pressure inside Armagh’s half ended with their Fijian number 8 breaking through an attempted tackle to run in from 20 metres out. The Armagh backline responded again through good work by Faloon and Misi to send Winder off on a jinking run to the line for a converted try 28-21 to Armagh. Yet again Armagh were the authors off their own downfall when the Lisburn left winger was able to pick up a loose ball on the halfway line after a backline move, ending with him touching down at the posts to bring the game level, 28-28. With Lisburn now in the ascendency, a late converted score gave them a deserved 35-28 win with the visiting side now having to regroup for their next conference league game.
